Secrets to Successful Waterbirth

Drawing on three decades of experience in waterbirth, Barbara Harper will address several areas of common concern about water labor and birth in this presentation including prevention of infection; handling a shoulder dystocia; assessment of blood loss; water temperature; immediate post partum and delayed cord clamping.  Powerpoint will be used as a teaching tool to illustrate certain discussion points.  There will also be time for questions and answers.  This session will be equally beneficial for the experienced birth provider and parents who want to expand their knowledge base and have a detailed overview of the miraculous benefits of the use of warm water immersion.

Barbara Harper began as an obstetric nurse in what she calls, “the dark ages,” but was actually in the early 1970s.  Barbara, the founder and director of Waterbirth International, has been researching and documenting waterbirth and gentle birth since 1981. As a writer she has had many articles published and is the author of the popular Gentle Birth Choices book and DVD (now in its 2^nd edition and translated into 7 languages) and also produced Birth Into Being: The Russian Waterbirth Experience DVD. Barbara is an experienced midwife, childbirth educator and doula. The Oregonian newspaper referred to her as “the Billy Graham of waterbirth,” for her missionary style zeal in spreading the word about the amazing benefits of laboring and giving birth in water. Recognized by Lamaze International for her contributions on a global scale, she lectures and consults within hospitals and universities throughout the world. She has traveled to 44 countries - so far - bringing the message of undisturbed gentle birth and waterbirth.  She has two websites – www.waterbirth.org and www.gentlebirthguardians.com - She is the mother of three grown children – two born at home in water and a proud grandmother of a 13yo grandson.  She lives near Boca Raton, Florida, where she is an active community member and volunteer.
